Mr Eazi and producer Dre Skull have announced their joint mixtape ‘Yard & Yanga', set for release later this year via Mixpak Records and emPawa Africa. The rollout begins today with “Lambo,” a dancehall banger featuring Vybz Kartel.
The title nods to both a Jamaican patois term for the island and the Nigerian Pidgin word for showing off, and the project is built around the long running relationship between West African and Caribbean music. Mr Eazi, known for hits like “Leg Over” and “Skin Tight,” and Dre Skull, the producer behind Vybz Kartel’s ‘Kingston Story’ and Popcaan’s ‘Where We Come From’ and ‘Forever,’ have worked together before on “Sekkle and Bop” and “Dance Pon Me.” This mixtape has reportedly been years in the making.
Mr Eazi says dancehall has shaped his sound since his earliest singles, describing this project as his own take on the genre rather than a straightforward Afro dancehall record. Vybz Kartel’s presence on “Lambo” continues his longstanding creative partnership with Dre Skull, one that stretches back to 2009’s “Yuh Love.”
The single’s cover art comes from UK based illustrator Kione Grandison, who drew on West African and Caribbean folk and street art traditions for the artwork.
